Letter from our President
October 2008
n Target – Some words from your President
History anyone? For a great article on the history of the compound bow (almost 40-years old now,) go to http://margo.student.utwente.nl/sagi/artikel/compound/compound.html.
Les was more, but sadly, no more. Lester Johnson was more than just a member of our archery club who was a pleasure to shoot with—whether shootin’ arrows or shootin’ the breeze. He volunteered extra time to, among other things, be a very dedicated Range Captain who cared about the preservation of the Club in addition to the maintenance of the road. Les is retiring and moving north, and as of now has shot his last tournament with us. We’ll miss him.
“Membership” means more than $60 a month. Our work parties NEED more than the same wonderful handful (or fewer) of members showing up on the Saturday a week before a tournament to do bale banding and moving, and whatever else is necessary to prepare the range for the following weekend. Please help out at least ONE TIME per year. The next big work party on Saturday, November 15th will also feature an Archery-items Garage Sale! Bring any archery-related equipment to sell, trade, or give away(?). It’ll be fun and practical, not to mention providing an automatic work force to ready the range for the 23rd. For those who want to take their membership to the next level, make sure you come to the business meeting on November 12th to nominate the candidate(s) of your choice for the annual Board election at the December 10th meeting. Nominations will continue right up to voting time, and self-nominations are always accepted.
If anyone is available Saturday, October 25th to help out at my son Richie’s Eagle Scout Service Project, the address is George F. Canyon Nature Center, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates, which is just south of the interaction with PV Drive North, across from the reservoir. They’re laying down stabilized decomposed granite on a trail.
Lastly, kudos to all the young archers who continue to set new range records!
Keep seein' sp ts,
